Laptop Issues

Are you installing or working with Linux on a laptop and have run into problems?

Suspend to RAM/hibernate problem, Sony VAIO VGN-SR39VN

The system does appear to be sleeping or hibernating as asked, but when I try to resume it, it always boots the whole system.

missing kernel?

ok i recently downloaded a ubuntu 10.10 gnome liveCD distro, and successfully installed it on my computer. i now want to install it on my laptop, which is an older model, with 128 mb ram and 6 gb of hd space, it currently has windows xp sp3 installed on it and because it is so slow and ubuntu is smaller (in requirements and physically) i want to install it as the standalone OS on the laptop. the only problem is that when i go to intall or even just run the program off the live cd, it says that it does not have the right kernel for my cpu and that "cmov" is needed.

Bootmgr missing

Hello,
I recently switched from Windows XP to Ubuntu 10.04. A few days ago I got an error message when trying to boot into Windows - 'bootmgr missing' I want to delete Windows completely but can't till I can access my backed-up data which is saved on a Western Digital External Hard Drive. The hard drive won't mount on Ubuntu. The error message advises me to boot into Windows first to attempt a repair, which, of course I can't do. Catch 22!

Any help would be gratefully received.
Chris

how to get a CLI before GUI starts? (laptop/DSL)

How do I interrupt a Debian (installed from DSL) boot process to get hold of a command line before X starts and changes the video mode?

Not enough RAM on laptop

I have an older Gateway laptop ... MX-3210
It only has a total of 256 of Ram and 35 Gb hard-drive.

My problem is that I have tried installing Ubunto 9.04. from a LiveCD. I ordered a CD with Ubuntu 9.04.02 from the Ubuntu website.
It says it has installed the files but then it freezes, when 'checking installation partition.' The battery gets so hot, it turns itself off. Has never gone any farther than that with Ubuntu.

I have, also, tried to install LinusMINT-7 ... the LiveCD (iso files) just sit there. I have double checked to make sure it will boot from CD. Nothing.

It does say that the install requires more RAM than I have available.
I know there must be another Linux Distro that will work with the smaller memory of an older laptop. Any suggestions?

I have looked at: Puppy Linux, Very Small Linux and eeeUbuntu. . . I don't know?
. . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . .

I am currently running LinuxMINT-7 on my desktop PC. It's great, everything worked right out of the box.

Resolution stuck on 800x600

hey guys

i just installed ubuntu 9.04 for the first time and this is my first time with linux. i notice my resolution is stuck and i cant change it. i already tried the hardrive intaller but it gives me an error saying "System error: Failed to lock /var/cache/apt/archives/lock." When i previously ran ubuntu from the cd i was able to install it. but the resolution wouldnt let me change it higher than 800x600 either. So i know thats not the problem.
I dont know the command line stuff is there a way you guys can help me? Different ideas would help coz im kinda stupid with linux still. My laptops details are below. Thanks guys.

PS. ali this is very good site for newbies. i read all the chapters and you really made everything clear. Thanks for a great site.

Acer Aspire 4520
AMD Athlon 64x2 Dual Core (1.8Ghz)
384mb Nvidia Geforce 7000M Graphics card
1 Gb DDR2 Ram

i still have vista installed and about 8GB for ubuntu. dont have much space on harddrive. i hope this is clear enough.

Sony Vaio PCG-F630

I am trying to load Ubuntu 8.10 onto an older Sony Vaio PCG-F630 laptop with a DVD. The laptop uses Windows Me as its operating system; I have put several disc in to make sure the DVD is booting from the drive properly; and it is.

Installing Ubuntu also requires booting from the DVD but the laptop does not recognize the presence of the DVD and when restarted the laptop boots into Windows Me. I have checked the BIOS and the CD drive is listed before the hard drive in the boot list.

Does anyone know what I'm doing wrong?
