Installation Issues

Having bothers setting Linux up?

Init question

This may be total lamb, but does anyone know which Fedora last used "sysvinit" ?

I would like to stay with this run level system and understand that it is no longer used on later revisions.

How to install ubuntu on external USB HDD

Hi
I installed Ubuntu 10.10 on my external USB HDD (320 GB with 2 NTFS, 1 ext4 and 1 swap partition)
I installed the bootloader into my external hard disk
I am able to boot into my ubuntu installation in my laptop by choosing USB boot option at BIOS start up
Though I have access to two modern PCs with USB boot capability, i am not able to boot into the Ubuntu installation on my external HDD.
After I choose USB boot , I just get a black screen with a blinking cursor at the left. The grub menu option does not load
How do I work around this problem?
Help please

No alternative boot offered after installation: XP as usual!

Hi all,

Installing multiple distros on one physical disk

Setting up a dedicated experimental/learning platform for Linux (and a little very rudimentary programming) on an older Dell notebook (P4M, 2GHz, 1GB RAM) into which I'll install a 160GB disc.

At the very least I want to set up a dual-boot system with Win XP and one Linux distro. However I have recent Ubuntu, Debian and Fedora distros on hand. Ideally I'd really like to set the machine up so that I can boot any of these distros from the single physical drive.

1. Is this possible?

2. Is this nuts?

3. if (1 && !2) what's the best strategy for carving up the drive?

Installing a Dual Boot System on Two Separate HD's with Ubuntu Linux and Windows XP

I had Suse Linux and Windows XP working on two separate hard drives (2-3 years). That died, so I went out and bought two new (bigger) hard drives to start fresh. I downloaded Windows XP (Home) on the first drive. Now, I put the second drive in (unformatted) and tried to install Ubuntu 9.04 from an ISO image I burned onto a disk. During the install, it did not recognize my other hard drive so, I aborted the install for now. I'm guessing I need to format the disk first.

Creating and making the cd

Ok here is my problem. I am typing this from a vista computer that i downloaded the ubuntu iso file onto. now I want to burn/write/copy or what ever they call it I want to put ubuntu onto the "NX2 nexxtech 16x 4.7gb dvdr" and then boot ubuntu on a windows xp tower I have. I used ISORECORDERV3 to "copy image" to the dvd now i also made my xp "boot" the cd drive FIRST and second and Floppy third and then hard disk LAST i put the dvd with the iso burned onto it but now it just goes a few minutes on a black screen then boots xp. I will soon make a youtube video on the problem Decribing everything on my account called "bookworm0303" once on youtube search for bookworm0303 needs help installing linux on his xp.
