I've just installed Mandriva 2009.1, having gotten sick of Ubuntu, or boo-boo. Before anyone says it's a known bug, I've applied all the known fixes and this apparently isn't it.
I have a conglomeration of hard drives and quad boot the machine, so mine is not exactly a common system.
I have 4 DOS 6.22 volumes, 4 W98 volumes, and 3 W2k volumes in this thing, totalling six hard drives. The kicker is, I have NO problem accessing the NTFS volumes. I have issues with the VFAT volumes! They refuse to mount until I use the partition manager, Disk Drake, to mount them!
I have to go into the configuration panel and mount the drives there -- using the configuration tool -- since any other attempt to mount the drives results in an unknown file system error.
Wait! It gets better!
Now that I've mounted the drives, I have issues with the volume manager. Every time I try to download and install any updates or other software, the system just gives me a please wait message and I get nowhere -- FAST!
I can unmount the volumes, (Using Disk Drake I believe), yet the volume manager is still tying up the system. I can't even release the locks on the rpm database using urpmi -- clean. I have to reboot, not just log out. Logging out hangs X.
At least I can play games, surf, or do other tasks once I've mounted the drives, but it's getting old opening up my partition manager and mounting the file system.
I thought it was an issue with my fstab, but that's fine and the system generates it without issue. A copy is posted herein.

It's got me frustrated. At least I can still laugh.
I can use the system. That isn't an issue. However, if I want to get any updates, install any software, or search the drive, I have to reboot the machine. umount won't work. Volume Manager seems to have a lock on the file system.
It isn't what I'm used to -- that's for sure. I'm used to the machine booting and mounting all the drives when I boot the machine. It isn't that it takes so long, but it is a pain when there are four dos volumes and four vfat volumes to mount. Yes, I do remember doing it all from the command line in the early days, but this ain't then!
Any ideas would be appreciated.
