I am trying to load Ubuntu 8.10 onto an older Sony Vaio PCG-F630 laptop with a DVD. The laptop uses Windows Me as its operating system; I have put several disc in to make sure the DVD is booting from the drive properly; and it is.

Installing Ubuntu also requires booting from the DVD but the laptop does not recognize the presence of the DVD and when restarted the laptop boots into Windows Me. I have checked the BIOS and the CD drive is listed before the hard drive in the boot list.

Does anyone know what I'm doing wrong?

I got an answer on another forum; when I burned the disk I burned as a DATA disc; needed to be burned as an ISO disc. Now that I got the disc to work I have another issue; when loading, I get a LOADING HARDWARE DRIVERS [fail]

anyone have a clue?

hi and welcome to the Ultimate Linux Newbie Guide.

Are there any more errors than just 'Driver fail?' What happens if you tap Ctrl+Alt+F1 ? Do you get more messages, if not what about Ctrl+Alt+F2, F3 or F4?

Really need to understand at what point there is a failure in the setup.

BTW I think I remember this machine and if I recall right it's very old. It's like a P3 or something (maybe early P4) with either 128MB or 256MB RAM. Have you checked the Ubuntu minimum requirements list on their website as I'm not sure that this machine will be up to the job. Consider Xubuntu or a smaller distro like Puppy for seriously old kit.

Hope this helps,

Ali
