Okay, I have been considering running Linux as a new OS for me, at the moment I have Windows Vista home premium 64-bit.

But every time I come across downloading Linux I question whether it will be compattable with the games/music software/programs/etc. that I use on an everyday basis. I saw your linux newbie guide on Youtube for Ubuntu which I do believe will be the new OS I download.

I do need to know if I will be able to download these "packages" to be able to run (any) software that I wish to use...

Like say GuildWars is a .exe application for Windows or some private servers games wich are also .exe.

Also if they dont work with what I find is there a way around it threw Ubuntu to make them work?

please reply or email me at DJx90core@gmail.com

(P.S.) Exellent work on the tutorials you did for Youtube =D

1) At the risk of sounding like a cracked record I wrote on the post "Is Linux right for me" (above)

"Don't "throw out the baby with the bathwater". Don't get rid of Windows. Keep Windows...and put Linux separately on the Hard Drive as well. There is a good guide about dual-booting at http://apcmag.com/the_definitive_dualbooting_guide_linux_vista_and_xp_st..."

Ali pulled me up because ULNG has a video about dual booting as well - http://www.linuxnewbieguide.org/content/new-video-tutorial-how-install-u...

You can also install Ubuntu INSIDE Windows as an app using Wubi. Or install Linux to an external USB Hard Drive or USB stick...

2) You can run SOME Windows apps on Linux BUT NOT ALL. You use a Linux app called Wine. Experience has shown me that there is a kind of hierarchy from Wine, through Wine-doors and PlayOnLinux to the commercial Windows emulators such as Cedega or Win4lin..

There is a list of Windows apps which will run on Linux at winehq.com. Look particularly at http://appdb.winehq.org/

For general Wine background I like http://frankscorner.org/

Guild Wars WILL RUN ON LINUX. Have a look at http://tombuntu.com/index.php/2007/04/01/guild-wars-on-ubuntu-with-wine/

Many more games will run on Linux. Your best bet is to Google e.g: ubuntu (name of game)

Okay so from what I have read, Wine is just like command promt for Windows. It may take some time, but I'm sure I will be able to make most programs work. Such as Google Chrome, Sony Acid, Zune media player.

I Hope fully I wont have to tweak too much one I am done, from there on I "hope" I will be able to just run the OS and have no problems.

Thanks for your reply. =)
