An error ocurred while loading the archive. (null)

My DVD player is not playing a movie and I thought I needed to upgrade so I tried to download a file and I got that error.

I really don't know what I am doing.

Also, after my computer has slept for any amount of time - the audio will no longer work and I have to restart it to get the audio to work.

I have a Dell Inspiron 15 inch laptop with Ubuntu.

 Yeah, a distribution upgrade might just be what you are after, especially if it's an older version of Ubuntu. Remember you might have to go in stages first though eg, 7.10, 8.04, 8.10, 9.04, 9.10.

Should I just upgrade to Karmic Koala? Would that take care of these things?

I am not afraid to tell you that upgrading scares me!
